The Durham Oriental Museum contains an amazing collection of artefacts from the cultures and civilisations of Asia, Egypt, Islamic North Africa, the Near East, and the Middle East, from the prehistoric right up to the twentieth century. Hall hill farm is a model farm and petting zoo that is home to a whole host of cute animals, including baby lambs, ponies, rabbits, pigs, donkeys, and fluffy chicks. There are are also a few more unusual animals such as the Higland Cow and the llama, and you can take a trailer ride round the farm.

Durham Castle is the foundation college of Durham University, and dates back all the way to 1072. Tours take around three quarters of an hour, and cost five pounds for adults and three pounds fifty for concessions. Times vary depending on college schedules, so it is best to book in advance.

The stunning Durham Cathedral is a very popular attraction for tourists, due in no small part to its huge tower, which can be ascended to give you a fantastic aerial view of the city. Admission to the main building is free, but there is a charge if you wish to ascend the tower. It is open between 9.30AM and 8PM most days.

The Beamish Museum is a living, open air museum, that is intended to show what life was like in nineteenth century Northern England. Here, you can ride an old steam train, visit a Masonic Hall, take a trip down a drift mine, or watch sweets being made. It really is like stepping back in time.

The Crook Hall and Gardens is a tapestry of visual splendour, with a wildflower orchard, a recently planted maze, an orchard, and a real haunted house. The themed gardens, such as the the Shakespeare Garden, the Secret Walled Garden, Cathedral Garden, and the Silver and White Garden are the star attractions, however.

Top Gear Karting is an exciting place to go for a high octane day out, with an exciting go kart track that is made even more exciting by the presence of ultraviolet tubes, spotlights, strobe lights, and smoke machines, lending it something of a nightclub atmosphere.
