A Floating World

By: Sal Greet

In 2004 when the Oasis of the Seas was commissioned the cruise industry was going from strength to strength. Sustained growth in numbers across the board and passengers looking for ever more luxurious cruise liners made the decision to commission the biggest cruise ship in history seem like a gamble worth taking.

When the ship was finally finished late last year things were very different. The economic crisis had struck and luxury holidays were hard hit, as the finishing touches were put to the Oasis in its dry dock in Finland experts were predicting the end of the cruise industry.

Yet the Oasis has proved to be an enormous success and the interest generated by its revival has gone some way into breathing life back into the cruise industry.

Weighing in at 225,000 the Oasis is, quite simply, enormous. It''s taller than Nelson''s column, contains 21 swimming pools, an open air amphitheatre, nine specialist restaurants and enough electric cabling to reach from London to New York.

The Oasis of the Sea is planned to be a Caribbean cruise-ship, and it''s maiden voyage was at the start of December, leaving from Fort Lauderdale in Florida to Haiti and then on and around the region.

With stakes so high, however, and the Oasis of the Seas soon to be joined by its sister ship the gamble appears to have paid off. The ship is booked up for years to come and the company that paid for it is bristling with confidence.

If you want to get a place on a luxury cruise, you don''t need to pin all your hopes on the Oasis or the allure of the Seas. Regardless of the popularity of the two ships, prices remain relatively low across the cruise industry and there are a number of great value cruise deals to be found.

One note, though, if you''re considering a cruise holiday, make sure that you book many months in advance. The best places on the best ships go very quickly and the earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. If you want to take a ride on the Oasis of the Seas, however, you should expect to be waiting for a very long time.
