A Holiday in Pisa

By: Caron Kristan

Everybody has heard of Pisa. The mere mention of the name conjures images of the infamous leaning tower in just a fraction of a second. Yet Pisa has a lot more to offer the casual tourist than examples of unstable architecture. It is a site of great historical importance within Italy as well as being a vibrant centre of modern culture. Unconvinced? Here''s a quick look at what''s hot in Pisa this summer:

Surrounding the Torre Pendente (leaning tower) are the rather more impressive Duomo (cathedral) and Battistero (baptistery). A morning or afternoon spent exploring the art and architecture of these impressive constructions, learning a little of their history and appreciating their full artistic merit, is sure to be time well spent.

If after all that culture you feel you need a little time to relax head straight for the Giardino Scotto. This tranquil space is the perfect place to lie back on the grass and enjoy a traditional Italian gelato or two, or three...

Pisa, like so many Italian cities, hosts a variety of enjoyable cultural festivals throughout the year and if you are able to time your visit to coincide with one of two of them it could be all the more memorable for the experience. June 16th is the date of the much loved Luminara festival, when, as the sun sets, the city comes to life, lit with over 10000 candles scattered around Pisa''s most beautiful old buildings and all along the city walls. Don''t expect an early night.
