The Dalaman region of Turkey is a place of immense natural beauty, with scented orange groves, beautiful cotton fields, and rocky outcrops as far as the eye can see. The recent introduction of an international airport has seen it become a popular destination for tourists looking to get away from it all. The town of Dalyan, in the Dalaman region, is home to the rare and endangered loggerhead sea turtle, also known as the Caretta. They live on the protected Iztuzu beach, a golden sandy beach that is a must see for any nature enthusiast. Dalyan contains some ancient Lycian rock tombs, also known as the Kings Tombs, that are built into the side of a cliff. These date back to around 400BC, and give a fascinating insight into the ancient Lycian way of life. A mere half an hour downstream from the Kings Tombs is the ruins of the ancient trading city of Kaunos, which archeologists believe dates back to around 3000BC. Here you can see the remains of a 1500 seater amphitheatre, Roman baths, and a church. Every year thousands of visitors flock to Dalyan to visit its miraculous mud baths. These sulphur rich baths are said to have astonishing anti ageing effects, and are beneficial for a whole range of ailments including kidney dysfunction, rheumatism, and dermatolological complaints. If you fancy a trip inland, the lakeside village of Koycegz is well worth a visit just for the sheer beauty of the scenery. For those who are interested in white water rafting, the rapids of the Dalaman river provide an excellent challenge for intermediate and advanced rafters. If you enjoy bird watching, you might want to pay a visit to the Dalyan Delta, which is home to a whole host of different species of birds and other wildlife. If you are in the mood for a quiet afternoon, why not hop on a boat to the secluded cove at Ekincik, a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. In recent years, the beach at Sarigerme has become a highly developed tourist resort, with a big hotel complex and an 18 hole golf course. The beach itself is perfect for sunning yourself or indulging in a range of exciting water sports.
