A Town Called Kilmarnock Article

John Walker was born on July 25, 1805 to Elizabeth and Alexander Walker at Todriggs farm near Kilmarnock. By the age of 14, John Walker was orphaned. Although the Walker family had farmed Todriggs for generations, it was sold in 1819 by John's trustees to raise enough money to set up a business for him. A grocery store that also sold wine and distilled spirits was set up for him in 1820.

By the time John Walker died in 1857, he had expanded more and more into spirits, including whisky, but the store was still a general grocers. In 1865, John's son, Alexander, set up shop as John Walker
