Vienna, the capital of Austria, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Boasting dozens of the finest examples of Baroque and Romantic architecture to be found anywhere, it is a strikingly beautiful and impressive city. Vienna is the sort of city where, as you wander around, you almost stumble from one astonishingly beautiful building into the other. The city centre itself is relatively small and many of the main sites are just a few hundred yards from each other. The city is particularly famous for its music and opera, and for hosting some of the finest museums in the world. The Opera House in the heart of the city plays host every year to one of the finest balls (Vienna is one of very few cities to retain a ''ball'' culture) in the world. Whilst the Christmas concert from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is broadcast around the world. The Natural History Museum has over 20 million different artefacts, some of which are the sole example of their kind in the world. The 25,000 year old Venus of Willendorf is one of the museum''s most important pieces, though tiny, whilst at the other end of the scale the massive, complete skeleton of a Diplodocus is one of the few complete skeletons of dinosaurs anywhere in the world. Vienna is the host to some hugely influential international organisations most of which are collected into the enormous UN complex. More bizarrely the city is also one of the headquarters of OPEC, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Companies. Vienna also boasts a collection of massive imperial palaces of which perhaps the two finest are the Hofburg and the Schonbrun. The former is now the official residence of the president of the Austrian republic, whilst the Schonbrun is used for special events, balls, and is also home to the oldest zoo in the world. With all the buildings to view and look around, any holiday in Vienna will almost certainly see you spending a lot of time walking around. Fortunately, sustenance is to be found on every street corner in the shape of street vendors selling sausages and other forms of Austrian cuisine. If you fancy something to drink, Vienna is one of the few cities to have its own unique vineyards, and you can sample the wine in a number of small bars around the city. Vienna has everything that you could wish for in a city break. The centre is small, so wherever your hotel is you''re guaranteed easy access to the majority of the major sites and as Vienna attracts tourists throughout the year there isn''t really a tourist season so you can get good deals throughout the year.
