A Winter Break in Barcelona

By: Haywood Estok

Ever since the city''s roaring success at hosting the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona has been transformed into one of Europe''s most popular tourist destinations. The transformations leading up to the Olympics opened up the city to the sea, which has turned Barcelona into a great place to see the sand and the sun as well as its many other cultural, sporting and gastronomic offerings.

Winter is a great time to go as there are so many budget deals available. Entrance prices to the city''s major attractions will be at a reduced price and companies such as Fly Monarch are offering great online, off peak winter holiday deals, including cheap flights and budget stays in top accommodation.

Whether it''s fabulous nightlife that you''re after, a city full of culture, or simply a pleasant change of scenery, a refreshing atmosphere and a milder climate, Barcelona ticks all the boxes.

Art lovers should head for the Picasso Museum, which houses a great deal of the artist''s most famous creations. The Fundacio Joan Miro is also a must see for all culture vultures.

Fans of architecture will be spoilt for choice in Barcelona. Of course the major attractions are Gaudi''s designs, in particular the on going Sagrada Familia. The Gaudi Park is also a great place to visit for a few relaxing hours wandering around pleasant gardens, soaking in the spectacular coastal views and enjoying the dreamlike architecture - a fabulous place to take your kids.

No trip to Barcelona would be complete without sampling some of the local delicacies. Barcelona is packed full of delightful tapas bars serving up plenty of delicious Catalan fare, and you should also make time to stop in at one of the city''s most famous seafood restaurants.

For the full gastronomic experience, add a bottle of the best local tipple to your meal, whether it''s beer, wine or sangria. For a novelty drinking experience, head to Chupitos where you will find a highly imaginative range of cocktails (including the Harry Potter cocktail, which shoots sparks at you before it is consumed).

For further information about Barcelona, check the web and invest in a good quality, reliable guide book. You might also like to take a look at the film ''L''Auberge Espanola'' - a witty tale of a French exchange student living in Barcelona for one year. The film truly makes the most of its delightful location and you''ll get a good few glimpses of some of the city''s architectural highlights.
