By: Caron Kristan

It is easy to forget when you take a look around diverse, cosmopolitan, trendy Birmingham today that this city was once the workshop of the world, the heart of the Industrial Revolution in the UK. This is a forward-looking city, yet its rich heritage is everywhere to be seen.

You too can delve into the treasure chest of Birmingham''s history. A visit to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will always be a rewarding experience, definitely worth a visit. It houses stunning and significant works from around the world, as well as a great collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings.

Take time out to see a show at one of Birmingham''s many popular venues. The city''s Hippodrome is an incredible, grandiose auditorium with space for 2,000 spectators. There is also the Alexandra which hosts drama, musicals, concerts and comedy, as well as the Birmingham Repertory Theatre where you can enjoy interesting, exciting and provocative modern drama.

Performers flock from all over to have their name in lights at Birmingham''s musical venues. The Symphony Hall is one of Europe''s finest concert venues, and a place where you will always find something spectacular to listen to. The NIA and the LG Arena regularly draw the crowds to see popular rock and pop performers, whilst smaller venues across the city always have something interesting going on.

Birmingham has in the last few years grown to become a great shopping centre for the whole region. Behind the striking facade of the Bullring shopping centre you will find Selfridges and a great many more large stores. The principal shopping streets across the rest of the town are New Street, High Street and Corporation Street, with a range of high street stores and discount outlets that open for you to visit.

The cosmopolitan essence of this modern, forward-looking city is there for any and all to taste in the wide range of restaurants on offer for you to go and visit. Birmingham is of course the home of the balti: the Balti Triangle is a dazzling part of town where the spices and flavours of Asia are there for you to experience.

Not only this, but Birmingham is a great party town too, where you can enjoy a memorable night out. Big venues like Gatecrasher Birmingham, Q Club and Oceana are the places to go to find world-famous club nights. Elsewhere, Mechu is a fine establishment where you''ll be able to sip champagne all through the night in the swish VIP lounge.

Set in the beautiful Heart of England, in Birmingham you''re only a short journey away from the more tranquil, ?olde? English destinations such as Shropshire, Warwick and Shakespeare''s birthplace at Stratford-upon-Avon. So pay a visit to a truly great British city and enjoy what Birmingham has to offer you.
