A brief guide to Budapest

By: Caron Kristan

Situated on the romantic Danube River, with the Great Plain to the east and the Buda Hills to the west, Budapest''s beauty is undeniable to anyone who comes and sees for themselves. Not only is its natural setting simply sublime; the rich blend of architectural styles comes together to add to the city''s attraction.

There are so many stunning sights that you simply must go and see on any trip to the Hungarian capital: the city''s spectacular neo-Gothic Parliament House is the country''s largest building, and was once even the largest parliamentary building in the world, with impressive rooms and halls inside that you will marvel at. With a guided tour every step of the way you''ll get to learn more about the place.

That''s not all: there is so much more across the rest of the city that you can see and enjoy. After visiting the Parliament House, you might want to cross the Danube over Margaret Bridge and then take a drive to the Royal Castle over on the Buda side of Budapest. You can have a look inside Matthias Church, visit the old Citadel, go for a walk at Heroes'' Square and the City Park too.

There is so much beauty to see in Budapest, and a great deal to go out and experience too. If you want to go out and sample the local cuisine, specialties include gulyas, a goulash-like stew filled with onions called porkolt, fishermen''s soup known as halaszle, always with plenty of paprika.

There are so many great restaurants open for you to enjoy a good meal. The Hungarians are masters when it comes to cuisine, keeping their rich culinary tradition whilst embracing the best influences from outside. Not only this, but Budapest is a great place for party animals these days: in the warmer months they flock to the ?kertek?, or ?gardens?, the city''s outdoor entertainment areas.

You''ll find a wealth of bars and clubs too, from the trendy and flash to the more downmarket. The popular wine pubs known as ?borozo? are perfect places to visit: they have great Hungarian wines on tap, usually at pretty low prices, particularly if you find one off the tourist trail.

If you want to immerse yourself in the city''s rich culture, then the Hungarian State Opera House is a must-see: not only will you get to watch great opera; it is also one of Europe''s finest opera houses to behold. As well as opera and classical drama, the city''s thriving theatre scene is attracting more and more new, exciting, postmodern work. A great place to go to see it all on show is the Palace of Arts, home to a modern art museum and a festival theatre, not to mention the Bela Bartok Concert Hall.

Budapest is a truly glorious city to behold, with so many sights and such great culture to enjoy. If you simply get yourself on the next plane out to Hungary and find somewhere to stay, you will fall for it at first sight.
