A brief guide to Krakow

By: Caron Kristan

A European City of Culture, a United Nations World Heritage site, and a great place to go shopping and enjoy an evening out, Krakow is the perfect place for a city break. As an ancient royal capital, Poland''s second city offers visitors a rich heritage to discover, which you too could go and explore.

The city lies about equidistant from the capital Warsaw and the Czech city of Prague. It is situated towards the south of the country, located on the Vistula river. And though it is popular with European holidaymakers, it remains unique, quite unlike anywhere else you would visit across the continent.

When you arrive in town and open your eyes, you''ll be greeted with an old world charm from the beginning: the little baroque churches all over the city, as well as the cobbled streets, the hidden courtyards, and the gargoyles peering down from atop all the old houses, give the impression of Krakow as a kind of treasure chest to be explored.

Yet at the same time the city is vibrant and dynamic, its cultural horizons still expanding even after all these centuries. Some of today''s most exciting film and art is on show in Krakow, alongside Leonardo da Vinci''s ''Lady with an Ermine'' as the famous Cazartoryski Museum and the regal Wawel Castle.

The city houses a large number of students. These young residents, not to mention the growing number of tourists that have been arriving in recent years, have made the nightlife in Krakow really take off. The Main Market Square, or Rynek Glownny as the Krakow folk know it, is where you will find busy pavement cafes where locals and visitors alike flock to have a drink or two in the evening before enjoying live music and dancing until late.

The market square pays host to local merchants'' stalls by day too, just as it has been doing for centuries. If you want to take home some Polish handicrafts as a gift then you will find something at the Cloth Hall, whilst the Cepelia stores on ulica Bracka are always popular as well. Of course, as a top European city, visitors to Krakow can explore the city''s range of shopping malls, all of which sell famous worldwide brands.

If you want to get away and discover more of the country outside the city then a popular place to visit is the Royal Salt Mine at Wieliczka, a unique underground town ten miles south-east, dating from the late 13th century. A little further afield, some visitors take the time to make a sometimes difficult and always moving pilgrimage to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Krakow is the kind of city that will open your mind, and give you the chance to explore a place with its own unique style and charm. One of the top three cities for tourists in central and eastern Europe, if you find a hotel to stay in for a trip over then you can find out exactly why.
