A brief guide to Lanzarote holidays

By: Sal Greet

Lanzarote is the largest of the Canary Islands, and also the furthest east. Only 80 miles away from the coast of Africa, Lanzarote benefits from year round warm weather, and plenty of sunshine.

There is typically a steady breeze across the island, courtesy of the Trade Winds, and this keeps the heat down to a pleasant level in the height of summer. This breeze has also made the island popular with windsurfers.

The volcanic origin of Lanzarote, an origin shared with the other Canary Islands, has bequeathed large sections of black volcanic rock and dust. You''ll find this black dust on many of the beaches, but there are also beaches that benefit from the golden sand blown over from the nearby Sahara.

In the centre of the island is the active volcano, Timanfaya. Now the centre of a national park, this attraction is one of the most popular on the island, and features a ''barbecue'' on which food is cooked by heat emanating from a volcanic vent!

The most famous son of the island is the late artist Cesar Manrique, a contemporary and friend of Picasso who spent much of his life developing the natural attractions of Lanzarote, whilst simultaneously influencing the conservative development policy that has prevented the island being spoilt in the name of tourism.

The former house of Manrique is now a museum and gallery for his work, and is a fantastic structure in its own right. The house, like something from a James Bond film, has been developed from a volcanic bubble, and is a favourite attraction of many who visit the island.

There are well developed tourist resorts across the island. For family holidays Costa Teguise has white sand beaches, and plenty of family bars and restaurants. There is British food available, as well as several Irish bars, and in addition, a couple of established windsurfing schools.

Down the coast, the resort of Puerto del Carmen caters for a younger crowd, with a more bustling and lively kind of nightlife. Find out more about the features of Lanzarote Holidays online at the sites of tour operators like Monarch.
