With Britain still firmly in the grip of recession, many holidaymakers are looking for ways to cut the cost of travelling abroad. Even if you are travelling to a relatively expensive destination such as Bordeaux in France, there are still plenty of things that you can do to keep costs down. Bordeaux can be an expensive place to visit, even more so than Paris. Taxis and public transport in Bordeaux are comparatively expensive, so it is a good idea to find a hotel or hostel that is close to the centre of town so that you can walk to most of the attractions. It is very difficult to find a parking space in Bordeaux, so unless you plan to travel outside of the city a fair amount, it is not a particularly good idea to bring your car or to hire one. It is such a beautiful, and relatively compact, city that you will get more from your visit if you explore it on foot. In bars and restaurants in Bordeaux, the drinks are very expensive indeed. Thankfully, the weather is usually nice, and the local wine can be bought cheaply from wine shops and supermarkets, so you could just buy a bottle or two and set up in the park for the day instead. A guided tour of Bordeaux could cost a pretty penny, so why not be your own travel guide by reading up about local attractions on the web and grabbing a free map from your hotel lobby? The tourist office also offers a wealth of free information for tourists. Bordeaux features some splendid buildings, such as the grand Bordeaux Cathedral, and the stunning Place de la Bourse, an 18th century civic square that contains the Stock Exchange, the Customs Museum, and the Fountain of the Three Graces.
