A guide to mobile phone options for your children

By: Porter Ivrin

As the cost of owning and running a mobile phone has come down, the number of youngsters who own their own mobile phone has increased. Parents feel that it offers added security and children enjoy being able to utilise this new technology.

Among the vast array of mobile phones currently on the market, a growing number of them have been designed with children in mind. From added security facilities and access controls to colourful child-friendly designs, never have there been so many handsets to choose from for parents looking for a phone for their children.

For younger children, buying them a mobile phone that has been designed specifically for their age group will often mean that they get a phone that is easier for them to operate. For an older child, you may want to consider buying a more standard phone design, adjusting parental controls to make sure they cannot access anything that you do not want them to online for example.

Mobile phones come with so many features now that it may be best to talk to your child about what they would like from their phone. Some children may be keen to have a phone that they can use as a camera too, while others may prefer a phone that lets them listen to music.

Mobile phones can now be used not only to keep in close contact with your children, but to keep tabs on exactly where they are. GPS tracking is fitted to all new phones as standard, including mobiles created for children, and this ability allows you to see where their phone is at any given time using your computer or your own mobile handset.

Children are often more likely to damage, lose or break their mobile phones than adults are, but you can protect against this. Opt for a phone that comes with a rubber grip outer layer or is made from reinforced plastic to prevent breakages, or invest in a protective case or holder for their phone that can attach to a waistband.

Most child friendly mobile phones come with some form of parental controls. These can be used to restrict phone usage to certain times of day, or to prevent the phone from being used to make calls to, or receive calls from, numbers that you have not authorised.

As regards tariffs, child-friendly contracts are available that allow you to make restrictions to the use of the handset. Another option, and the most popular among parents, is the pay as you go tariff. When the credit runs out on their mobile phone, no more calls or texts can be made, so it helps you control the amount that is spent on calls and messages.
