A review of the new Samsung Genio

By: Porter Ivrin

Touch screen phones are all the rage just now, but if you cannot afford one of the flagship models such as the Samsung Omnia Pro or the HTC Hero, then you might want to consider the Samsung Genio, which was originally intended for children but contains enough advanced features to get adults hooked as well.

The features of the Genio include a touch screen, widgets for sites such as YouTube and Myspace, a 2 megapixel camera, a web browser, and an FM radio.

The display really lets the phone down, however, as it is quite blurry and indistinct, with a low resolution for this type of phone.

Although the interface is a little jerky, the phone at least lets you know when you have made contact with the screen by giving you a slight vibrational buzz every time you touch it.

The TouchWiz interface is easy to use and well thought out, and the icons are all the right size for the tip of a finger. If you want to use one of the widgets, you can simply drag it across from the left hand side of the screen with your finger.

The phone itself is very lightweight and thin, which is a good thing on the whole, but it does not give the same impression of solidity as some of the more expensive touch screen phones on the market.

The sound quality on voice calls is very good indeed, but the phone is quite uncomfortable to hold up to your ear for long periods due to its unusual wedge shape. However, you can always use the hands free kit provided.

Unfortunately, there is no 3G access, which makes activities such as web browsing and emailing painfully slow. Also, there is no Wi-Fi or GPS capability, so if you want to use your phone for navigation or web browsing, you might be better looking for a more expensive model.
