While cameras have been included with mobile phones for almost a decade now, very few of these cameras have been capable of competing with standalone digital cameras on their own terms. If you happen to own a company that makes digital cameras, you might want to look away now, because Sony Ericsson have unveiled a new phone, the Satio, that includes a camera that is every bit as good as most standalone digital cameras. The Sony Ericsson Satio features a camera with, amongst other things, a 12.1 megapixel resolution, a 12x zoom, touch and auto focus, red eye reduction, video recording, shake compensation, a Xenon flash, and face and smile detection. The phone looks slick and feels professional, with a jet black finish, a mirrored screen, and a sturdy construction. It is cosmetically similar to its predecessor, the Sony Ericsson C905, although inside the casing, it is a very different beast. As you would expect, the picture quality is excellent, and video footage shot on the phone seems clear and smooth. The sound recording quality is better than you will find on most cameraphones, although that is not saying much. The sound playback quality is on the whole excellent, and the phone is compatible with the popular MP3 format, which means you can load music from your collection onto your phone with the aid of a home computer. However, the phone only comes with 128MB of memory, so you will need to buy a memory card if you want to make the most of the phones capabilities. If you have ever used iTunes, then you may find the Play Now media interface used by the phone to be somewhat similar. You can buy music, games, videos, wallpapers, and ringtones from the Play Now store, which is integrated with the media player. The phone runs on the increasingly popular Symbian operating system, an open source competitor to Googles Android OS and Microsofts Windows Mobile, and is the first Sony Ericsson phone to do so.
