A weekend with a difference

By: Sal Greet

Friday night can sometimes be a bit predictable. Of course, it''s completely natural to have that focus on those two days every week when you can sit around in your dressing gown all day and then put on something smart and go out in the evening, but every now and again you need to mix things up a bit.

A weekend away from home, though, would mean that you wouldn''t necessarily have to take any time off at the same time as having a much required break. And if it''s clubbing or just having a great time that you''re after, then heading off for a couple of days to a resort in Europe could provide just the thing to keep you looking forward to the end of the week.

Europe''s clubbing capital is unquestionably Ibiza, making it the primary choice for a weekend party break. Clubs like Space, Amnesia, and Es Paradis are among the most famous and established venues in the world, playing host to internationally renowned DJs such as Paul Oakenfold and Fatboy Slim.

Famous for having opening hours in the middle of the afternoon or even earlier, Ibiza is ideal for anyone hoping to completely forget themselves for a couple of days, rather than going to the same bars and clubs as they usually would if they were to stay in the UK.

The fact that parts of the island are actually UN protected heritage sites just goes to show that this island isn''t just about the nightlife. When it''s blessed with good weather (which is almost always), Ibiza is absolutely stunning to look at, making it the perfect place for a bit of sunbathing and relaxation as well as partying.

Europe''s clubs and bars aren''t limited to Ibiza, of course. Maybe if you''ve been to the island a few times already, a visit to Bulgaria will give you something fresh and new, and the capital Sofia will more than satisfy with its impressive list of globally recognised clubs (not to mention the fact that they won''t be half as expensive as their Ibizan alternatives).

Similarly out of the way is the Greek island resort of Kos, perhaps not a household name in the same way as Ibiza or even Bulgaria, but certainly a place to consider if you fancy a weekend of clubbing without such a huge number of other tourists with you.

Often what you need at the end of an interminable Monday-to-Friday nonstop week is to sit around at home drinking tea and watching daytime telly. But every now and again slipping away for a short break on the continent can offer a unique combination of calm and activity in a way that just sitting on the sofa for two days simply won''t.
