AT&T HTC Tilt 2: Hits the Jackpot

By: Doland bachen

I owned the HTC TyTNII (Tilt, aka Kaiser), liked it, had HTC HD, then briefly went to the iPhone, now have this telephone (generally known as Contact Professional 2 on different carriers and globally).

The telephone itself is gorgeous. The decision high quality is ideal, the speaker, the mic, and the ringer are all loud and clear. The slide-out full QWERTY keyboard significantly improves usability of many apps like immediate messaging or e-mail. Typing lengthy URLs, and having the left-right (and up-down) keys to appropriate typing mistakes is a big time-saver. The unit is a bit hefty, just like the unique Tilt. The display is a big, sharp, 800x480 WVGA one. The GPS receiver is ultra fast, it takes lower than a second to start out tracking utilizing Bing or Google maps.

Second, the OS - WM 6.5 is a reasonably minor upgrade from 6.1. The perfect 6.5 features are the inclusion of the Pocket IE model 6 (together with the ability to show web sites with Flash), a nicer start menu, extra finger-pleasant menus all around, assist for widgets (lightweight XML feed apps that draw content from content providers), and Market for Mobile.

Pocket IE 6 is a a lot better browser than the previous PIE. The AT&T also consists of Opera Mobile - some say an excellent higher cellular browser. Shopping experience shouldn't be pretty much as good and fluid as on the iPhone, but adequate to be fun. Having a stylus is useful for clicking on links, since I may by no means press on small hyperlinks on the iPhone.

The Home windows Live Cellular (WLM) app lets me keep related to my e-mail and the instant messenger. The Hotmail gets pushed to the phone because it arrives, no need to test for it. From what I'v heard, the characteristic shouldn't be supported for other internet e-mail, like Yahoo, or Gmail. As I am within the Hotmail atmosphere, the WLM also syncs all my contacts between the Hotmail server and the cellphone, so I don't even need to use ActiveSync, or scribble cellphone numbers in various files. I'd say that WLM suite is the one "killer app" of the Home windows Mobile platform, and I hope the MS continues to work on it.

The Begin Menu is improved, with colourful high-res icons, which are organized in a honeycomb fashion. Actually, I do not use the TouchFlo3D anymore, as a result of as superior as it's, it tends to take too much RAM. I just configure the phone to point out the straight minimal At this time Display, and use the Start Menu to launch programs.

The Market for Mobile is a good attemp by MS at having a single standardized retail outlet. The Windows Cellular at all times had tons of apps scattered around many online retailers and hacking boards, so MS decided to provide regular non-technical customers with a single dependable app supply (clearly seeing the success of the Apple App Store). The Market may be very straightforward, I'd say, trivially easy to use.

In the end, I very very like the phone. Windows Cellular is a strong, fun, and nonetheless somewhat quirky OS. The cellphone itself is a hub of connectivity, able to 3G, WiFi, and GPS reception. I discover myself all the time checking on what is going on when somebody IMs me, or an e-mail arrives. I completely overlook that it is usually a cellphone, to me it's the closest factor to having a pc in the pocket.

Cons

- I specifically wanted to learn books on the devise, but all the book readers I have downloaded depend on hardware buttons that do not exist. I'd love to re-purpose the amount up and down keys for altering pages, but can not seem to find a way. Hopefully software updates will repair the issue.
- No 3.5mm jack! What's problem HTC? At the least it does ship with a very good adapter, and the MP3/WMA's do sound fairly good on it.

- Still slower than I had hoped. Not a biggie contemplating I knew the iPaq truly has a faster core processor speed at 624 vs. 528mhz for the Tilt2, however nonetheless definitely not any higher than the outdated PDA. It amazes me so little has progressed in hand-helds cpu within the last 6 years!

- I do not get what the big deal is in regards to the contact move? Except you are "easy", it's simpler to use the Start Menu to seek out your apps. Then again, perhaps I am just a energy user.

- Won't sync with my XP desktop, although it syncs fantastic with the brand new Win 7 laptop.

- Minor caveat; Opera Mobile isn't that nice, but is ready as default. IE is a lot better (and no I am not a fan boy.)
