Albufeira is a town on the Algarve, in the central region, and is a popular holiday destination for thousands of tourists who stay in Albufeira hotels every year. The old town of Albufeira is a good-looking, cobbled street affair that is packed with restaurants and cafes that serve some excellent seafood - grilled sardines are a local favourite and a bit of a signature dish of the area. In addition, there are plenty of bars and shops to explore during the day, with the many of the bars open well into the small hours, and complemented by a good selection of nightclubs. Albufeira is just 40 km away from Faro airport, and so is easily reachable by taxi. You''ll find a good selection of Albufeira hotels online through sites like Octopus Travel. As well as the ubiquitous grilled sardines, there are several gastronomic treats that it would be a crime to miss out on, including the cataplana of steamed shellfish, and another local delicacy, fish stew. There is Michelin-starred restaurant in Albufeira called Vila Joya, which is located on a cliff-top and offers spectacular views (as well as top class food). There is no shortage of beautiful beaches in and around Albufeira. Many of these beaches have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award by the European Union for top class facilities and cleanliness. The main beaches are known as Praia do Tunel, which translates as Albufeira Beach, and Praia dos Pescadores, or Fishermans Beach. As you might expect from a coastal area that has been highly developed for tourism, there are a wide range of water sports activities on offer, such as scuba diving, paragliding, and windsurfing. In addition to these, there are lots of little boats that can be chartered to provide you with a tour of the many caves and inlets in the cliffs on the coast. If you fancy some more involved sightseeing, diving, or fishing excursions, you could head down to Albufeira marina, which is to the west of the town.
