Elounda, sometimes spelled Elounta, is a pretty little coastal village on the Greek island of Crete. It is close to the town of Agios Nikolaos, and was the setting for the famous 1970s BBC TV series The Lotus Eaters and Who Pays the Ferryman. These shows created a fascination with the village that continues to this day. Elounda can boast a pretty clock tower, and a beautiful Greek Orthodox church adorned with colourful frescoes, golden chandeliers, and numerous icons. There are also lots of interesting little shops in the town where you can buy jewellery, woven goods, and herbs and spices. Elounda is close to the small island of Spinalonga, which was the last leper colony in Europe, and was the subject of Victoria Hislops novel the Island. Spinalonga is just a short boat ride from Elounda, and is well worth a visit. The traditional village of Pano Elounta is just a short walk up a hill from Elounda, and is literally like stepping back in time. Pano Elounta has been designated as an official European Heritage Site, and great care has been taken to preserve all the original features. The modern day village of Elounda was built over the ruins of the ancient Dorian city Olounda. You can still see some of these ruins from the shores of Elounda, but if you want to take a really good look, you should hire some snorkelling or scuba diving equipment and head under water. There are lots of great places to go for a drink or a bite in Elounda, including quaint little kafenions, traditional ouzerias, ultra modern bars and restaurants, and laid back tavernas. The more old fashioned places offer more traditional fare, whereas the more modern places offer an updated version of traditional Greek cuisine. Whether you just want to catch some rays or do some exciting water sports, Elounda has more than its fair share of clean, convenient blue flag beaches. Popular activities include scuba diving, windsurfing, sailing, and of course swimming. Elounda Municipal Beach is the main beach in Elounda, being the closest to the centre of the village, and by far the most popular. For this reason, it can be a little crowded over the summer months, so you might be better off heading to the neighbouring Elounda Rocky Beach if you want a bit more space and tranquillity.
