An introudction to Portugal

By: BERENICE KORBAL

Portugal lies on South-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, a location which pretty much guarantees visitors beautiful weather during the summer months. Climate is only one of Portugal''s many attractions; here is a guide to a few of the best.

When it comes to getting to Portugal its popularity as a holiday destination means you have lots of options. Most major airlines offer regular flights there, and it''s often possible to get good deals on flights with companies like EasyJet. When it comes to getting around the country itself Portugal has a relatively good rail service, but for the maximum relaxation its well-worth hiring a car to explore the island.

Accommodation is another area where you''ll be spoilt for choice when visiting Portugal. For those on a budget there are youth hostels and cheap hotels scattered through the country. If you''re looking for a bit of luxury then try one of the five star resorts peppering the coast ? Hotel Albatroz, in Cascais is a particularly attractive option.

Food-wise Portugal benefits from its sunny climate. This is most obviously seen in the quality and range of its wines; a great way to experience the best of these is to go on one of the many wine tasting tours the larger wineries offer. A particularly popular meal is bacalhau (dried cod), but the hundreds of different permutations on this dish means you won''t get bored of it too quickly. Portugal also has the usual range of international chains, particularly in the major cities.

If you''re looking for an active holiday the seas around Portugal offer numerous opportunities for sailing, surfing and body-boarding. Depending on what time of year you go you might be able to watch some of the World Surfing Championships, which have in the past been held in the seaside community of Maderia.

If your definition of a good holiday is fitting in as much culture as possible then Portugal''s range of options is extremely impressive. For a one-stop shop with something whatever your interests then Lisbon''s Calouste Gulbenkian Museum houses some of Portugal''s most beautiful artwork - Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian, and European art are all well represented here.

Another interesting venue is the entro Cultural de Bel?m (Bel?m Cultural Centre). This is an auditorium which regularly shows world-class ballet companies, symphony orchestras and operas. Lisbon''s delights don''t stop at culture however: the city plays host to a street festival in honour of Santo Ant?nio every June and the Parque Florestal de Monsanto provides a green space for those looking to relax in the sun.

Portugal is a country so full of delights you could spend years exploring it and still not do it justice. Its history, culture, and sheer beauty mean that those looking for something a little special from their holiday destination need look no further.
