It can be tricky to see whether a contact lens is inside out or not, as they are so transparent and thin. The easiest way to tell is to place it on a finger and hold it up to your eyes. If the edges flare out at the top, and it appears U shaped, then you have it the right way round. Your lenses may have a tint, or a laser etching, that is only visible when they are not inside out. While this type of lens can be a little more expensive, it can be a valuable time saver. Never use soaps that contain lanolin or moisturising lotion when washing your hands before applying contacts, as they can irritate your eye. Also, try not to use oily or scented soaps, which can leave a trace on the lens. If your lens is stuck inside the case, you can usually loosen it by shaking the case lightly, and then sliding it out into your hand. Avoid pulling it out with your finger, which can damage the lens. It can be a good idea to adhere to a strict routine when putting on your contact lenses, always applying to the same eye first so that you do not run the risk of putting them in the wrong way round. Also, you should keep your nails short when you are first using contact lenses, so that you do not run the risk of scratching your eye. To apply contact lenses, place the lens on the tip of a dry finger, pull up on your eyelid with your other hand, and carefully position the lens on your eye while looking forward or upward. You can also place it on the white of your eye that is nearest your ear if you find that to be easier. After putting the lens in, close the eye gently, roll your eyes all the way round to settle the position of the lens, and blink a few times. Look in the mirror to check that it is in the right place, although if you are comfortable and can see clearly, the chances are that you have put it in correctly. When removing contact lenses, you should always wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. If you are at a sink, it can help to place a clean paper towel over the drain, so that if it falls, you will not run the risk of it falling down the drain.
