A fascinating country, Thailand is of course well known today as one of Asia''s most turbulent and troubled spots. However it remains at once a beautiful, spiritual destination and a busy, thriving resort where visitors flock in droves year on year. Its buzzing capital of Bangkok in particular draws so many from all over the world. Bangkok is striking first and foremost for its immense size. Suffering from heavy pollution and living in seemingly constant chaos, you have to head there knowing what you''re likely to be faced with if you are to enjoy it and appreciate it. Indeed one of the first things you''ll notice about the lives of the natives is the crippling poverty they suffer. However in spite of this their families and communities remained spirited, strong and happy. Take a cruise along the Chao Phraya and you''ll see for yourself the remarkable lives of the locals, the men fishing for their families, the women using the water for cleaning, and the children playing on the banks. On the highways of the city, if you''re feeling adventurous then you might want to take a tuk-tuk ride. However it is certainly not for the faint-hearted, so be warned. Bangkok has hundreds of temples, but luckily the best are located in the Old City on Rattanakosin Island. The top three comprise of Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. The first is huge and even has another palace, Wat Pha Kaew, the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand within its walls. Wat Pho is home to the world''s largest reclining Buddha and across the river Wat Arun is Thailand''s most picturesque. Shopping in Bangkok is world famous. You have a captivating mix of modern malls, packed full of international labels, including very high end designers. At the other end of the scale you have markets selling local crafts and materials, hand made suits and of course fake garments, watches and jewellery. The Siam Centre, Siam Square, Siam Paragon, MBK and The Emporium are all popular choices when it comes to the city''s malls. At Patpong Nightmarket, Suan Lum Night Bazaar and many other places you''ll find markets along with Thai entertainment. Hotel wise, Bangkok has a lot to offer and can cater to any budget. There are some hotels which are so luxurious you wouldn''t expect them to be in Bangkok, and if you are on a tight budget you will also be in luck. Even at the lower end of the price scale, service is impeccable and local knowledge is invaluable.
