Beat the Recession, visit Manchester!

By: Caron Kristan

In the midst of the economic gloom, one British city continues to develop at a remarkable rate. Manchester, the self-styled capital of the north-west, has one of the most rapidly developing economies of any European city and is the most visited city in England by tourists outside of London.

Although the area around Manchester has history dating back to the Romans, a history that is celebrated in the museums of the city, it was during the industrial revolution that the Lancashire market town began its rapid growth. As the revolution slowed down, so too did Manchester, but now the city is back with a bang, and Manchester hotels are often full to the brim, so make sure you book in advance.

After a brief period where Manchester''s development slowed it is now back to rapid growth and has modernised at a remarkable rate. Manchester''s appeal as a tourist destination is very modern indeed. It is one of the major centres of the arts in Britain, particularly in regard to it''s theatres, which host many of the same shows that run in London''s West End, just with tickets that aren''t quite so expensive.

Of course, the most famous of Manchester''s arts remains music. Rising to major prominence in the early nineties, Manchester has since produced some of the biggest bands in the UK and the city remains a great location for seeing top quality music.

Whilst Manchester is known for its nightlife, it has a lot to offer people looking for other forms of entertainment. It has some of the biggest museums and art galleries in the UK, including a significant amount of Egyptology. It is also a surprisingly green city with many open spaces and parks which host events in the summer. If you fancy a city break, Manchester is also a great option because it''s just a short train ride from the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines and some of Britain''s most spectacular landscapes.

Manchester is a city that is rapidly developing, and new building work in and around the city centre has meant that Manchester hotels rival those of any city for their quality and for their value. If you''re looking for a city break, or a ''staycation'', Manchester is a great place to visit.
