Young women took to the slopes with little more than smiles and the skimpiest of bikinis and a touch of sun cream in the French Alps to enjoy a bit of summer skiing. Of course, eye protection, ski boots, and ski gloves were permitted for this unique event. Bare-chested men in bathing trunks, shorts, or long pants got off easy as they certainly have more clothing on than the skimpily-clad bikini wearing females. Adorned with ski caps or fur-lined hats, with sunglasses or goggles, the skiers basked in the warmth of the sun and the gazes of awe showered on them by spectators. Banned by many countries as an indecent piece of clothing it took quite some time for the fashion world to get the bikini accepted as decent swimwear and now here it is being donned for skiwear by young and old alike. Skiers enjoyed showing off their skills during the bikini ski contest held in June of 2009 at the French Tignes resort. One of the few locations in France with year round temperatures cool enough to allow for snow, the French Tignes resort area is perfect for a competition of this type. Originally launched to attract summer skiers, it appears that the bikini contest might become an annual event drawing greater numbers of contestants in future years. The Tignes can offer more skiing than many other locations simply because of its high altitude and commitment to provide a 1000-metre vertical for the major portion of the year. At Tignes, the underground funicular lifts the skiers to a dozen ski lifts within seven minutes. Ski slopes at Les 2 Alpes and other legendary French resorts such as Chamonix or Val d'lsere offer numerous slopes for winter or summer skiing. Only seasoned skiers should attempt to enjoy the slopes with little more than bikinis on since a fall could prove to be quite harsh to bare skin. Aside from the contest, skiers have been showing up on slopes in the French Alps donned in swimwear and of course, their ski gear. The world should expect more of the same for years to come.
