Imagine a game of poker where everybody has their cards on the table facing up. The strongest hand would win in every game, which would make for a very tedious game indeed. This false show of confidence, intended to scare other players out of the game, is known as bluffing. There is not a whole lot you can do about the cards you are dealt. In a clean game, it is an almost entirely random process. If you want to beat the spread, you need to learn to win without a winning hand. It can take a very long time to acquire this skill. Over time, you will start to get a better idea of the type of situations where a bluff might win the game for you. However, you do not want to be too predictable with this, as the other players will be looking to spot patterns in your play in order to exploit them. There are two types of bluff, a pure bluff, and a semi bluff. A pure bluff is when a player bets or raises when they know that there is no chance of putting together a winning hand, in the hope that their show of confidence will convince all the other players to fold. A semi bluff is when a player bets on a hand that has the potential to be a winning hand if the right cards come up. For example, if you are one card away from a flush or a straight, and stay in the game, that is a semi bluff. Whatever you do, do not just bluff randomly or every few games, as this is a strategy that will lose you more money than you earn from it. It is far better to choose your moments selectively, and only bluff when you feel that you have a good chance of winning the hand. It is important to learn the skill of bluffing if you want to be a good poker player, there is no rule that says you have to bluff. In fact, unless you are a good bluffer, the chances are that bluffing will cost you more than you earn from it.
