Changes in Keyword Tactics

By: Osvaldo Sharpsteen

Buying domain names with targeted keywords was once a popular method. Yet many of the most popular domains have no keywords in them. This has led to the realization that the focus on keywords belongs in social media and content. Keyword use in URLs is no longer effective.

Placing meta data keywords has also become a pass? tactic. It has been revealed that Google does not pay attention to meta keywords when calculating search results. Yahoo! appears to use them, so they are worthwhile, but Google is still king and likely to be for a while. Using the meta keyword tag can be useful, but it will not make or break your search engine results.

Keyword density is another SEO strategy that Internet marketers have used to increase SERP rankings. The problem is that an overabundance of the same keywords can actually hurt search rankings. One or two percent is plenty. In the average blog post, that's one or two instances of a keyword or phrase. In an article, it is about four. More than that and the Google algorithm can put you in the ?spam? category, dropping your search ranking.

Meta descriptions used to garner significant attention as well, but Google displays results by finding matching lines and phrases in your content that match the search query. The matching snippet is displayed below your link. This is where keywords and phrases become important.

Content and Social Media:With meta keywords becoming less important to SEO, it has become all about content and social media. Keeping a presence on Twitter and FaceBook, plus keeping a blog have become vital marketing strategies. By focusing your tweets, FaceBook entries and blogs on your targeted keywords and phrases, you increase your ability to pull in traffic. While Google searches will return content from your blog posts, your tweets and FaceBook entries will bring in more traffic. Using social bookmarking through sites like Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon are also important to pulling in extra traffic outside of Google searches.

It is likely that SEO strategies will continue to change and evolve with changes to social media. Use what works now and keep a constant eye out for new methods and techniques that can keep drawing traffic to your site.
