Children May Give Out Too Much Personal Information

By: Senny Scampton

Children's safety may be threatened if the personal information they place online falls in the wrong hands. Profiles of children are constructed every time they provide a piece of information about themselves.

Information is mainly for marketing reasons, but pedophiles may take advantage of its presence as well. While we all recognize this technology presents enormous opportunities for our kids, it also presents dangers that we've never needed to confront before, a house representative told about 60 people attending a conference on Internet safety.

The representative of state is sponsoring a bill requiring that companies seek out parent's permission before passing on information taken from these kids. The bill instructs companies to also give the source of the data and where it was shared. Many parents might not realize just how much more information their kids are giving out than they should.

The data that the kids share while online can be combined to form the identities of the kids and their families. According to a parent, she finds it incredible that people her son wouldn't know would know him more than she does.

Educating people about why there is such a bill is important. Supporting him is a woman whose daughter was kidnapped and murdered.

The suspect was found guilty of murder. The decision of whether or not to put him to death is in the hands of a panel. In exchange for $277, a marketing company willingly sold their list of names and addresses to someone they hadn't realized was a reporter. There are those who don't favor sex offender registry and community notification programs.

We won't be able to find out the identity of these offenders, but they will be able to find out about the identities of others. Making sense of all this is not working. According to the marketing industry, there are enough voluntary safeguards. The father of the victim told them that though they would want to see the victims, he can't show them any and that they won't even be able to testify. Those at the conference tackled on the elements found on the Internet that would pose as a threat to a child's safety.
