Choosing the right wedding party flowers for your Plymouth wedding day

By: Nita Hannibal

The most obvious, and convenient place to begin when you are choosing flowers for your wedding is with the flowers worn by the wedding party. This includes the bridesmaids, the best man, the bride and groom, the parents, the flower girls, and ushers.

The first thing you should do is to pick out the bridal bouquet, which is the centrepiece for the entire wedding. All the other flower choices can be made after this, and it makes it much easier to colour coordinate.

It is important to let the florist see the bridal gown when choosing the bridal bouquet, so that it can compliment it perfectly. If you do not have the gown yet, you could take some pictures and swatches along instead.

Bridal websites and magazines are a great place to find inspiration for your flower display. This will give you a better idea of the type of flower display that you would prefer for your big day.

Bridesmaids will traditionally hold bouquets that are smaller, simpler versions of your own. Make sure that you let the florist know what your bridesmaids will be wearing, as well as their individual heights and ages. This will help them to determine the colouring and the size required for each bouquet so that all bouquets are in perfect proportion for your bridesmaids.

If smaller children are taking part in your wedding, either as bridesmaids or flower girls, then posies look wonderful. However, if you are worried about them having to hold on to a posy for hours on end, then there are alternatives. Why not have them wear a simple flower in their hair, or wear a fresh flower corsage instead.

Buttonholes are traditionally worn by all the male members of the wedding party, such as the father of the bride, the groom, brothers and grandfathers, the ushers, the best man, and anyone else who is giving a reading. However, buttonholes and corsages can be worn by any member of the wedding party.

When choosing flowers for the buttonholes for the men in your wedding party, and corsages for the mothers of the bride and groom, again their outfit colour matters. Traditionally women should have a larger version of the buttonholes used for the men, with usually double the amount of flowers used. You can use fresh, but may want to consider realistic silk flowers as a sturdier alternative that will last the day.
