Christmas 2009: Thinking Outside the Box

By: Tamiko Shirvanian

There are plenty of traditions to look forward to at Christmas time. The world famous Christmas dinner, for example, is certainly one time honoured tradition to be respected. However, not everything about Christmas should remain the same each year. Particularly when it comes to shopping for Christmas presents, you will no doubt want your choices to be original instead of predictable.

If you are creatively inclined, then perhaps you could take a hands-on approach this year and try to make some of your Christmas presents yourself. Homemade Christmas presents are personal and touching, thanks to the time and effort involved in the process.

Experts in the kitchen should make the most of their culinary skills over the festive period by presenting their nearest and dearest with such seasonal treats s mince pies, Christmas biscuits or even a good old fashioned flagon or two of their own home brewed Christmas tipple.

Another way to spoil your friends with a range of gastronomic treats, without spending hours slaving away in the kitchen, is to create your own Christmas hampers. Find an attractive basket or box and fill it with your best friend's favourite seasonal treats for a present that is tailor made to suit the recipient's personal tastes and preferences.

Moving away from the gastronomic side of Christmas shopping, if any of your nearest and dearest are avid book lovers then you could consider sourcing out a rare or out of print edition of an old favourite of theirs. The most efficient way to go about this is to use a website which scans hundreds of different second hand bookstores to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

If you've not yet found gift inspiration then the internet will prove highly useful. You'll find a range of inventive and versatile gift solutions quite literally at your fingertips, all available for online ordering and delivery.

Be sure to watch out for any hints and tips that your friends and family may be leaving for you. They could be intentional or inadvertent, but either way they are sure to help you make a great gift choice this year.

Don't go for the obvious and steer clear of those 'safe' Christmas present purchases by choosing to shop in more unusual places and you are sure to find gifts that are truly memorable for Christmas 2009.
