Classic Cape Town - the Top Ten Visitor Attractions Article

By: Mathilda Riesland

1) Table Mountain. The summit, with its fabulous views across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, can be reached on foot (via Platteklip Gorge) or by cablecar. A must for all visitors to the city.

2) The Gardens. The place where the Dutch settlers originally grew their vegetables in the seventeenth century; now home to public gardens and key institutions, including the South African Museum, South African National Gallery and South African Library.

3) Greenmarket Square. This cobbled square houses one of Cape Town's oldest and most vibrant flea markets. Serious art lovers can visit the Old Town House, which houses the Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish old masters ? including a painting by Frans Hals.

4) The Waterfront. Cape Town's premier shopping and eating venue, the waterfront development in the docklands buzzes with activity all year round, with malls, cinemas, a world-class aquarium and much more.

5) Robben Island. The island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years is a scenic boat ride from the Waterfront. Visitors can see Mandela's old cell and the quarry where he and other anti-apartheid activists did hard labour.

6) Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. One of Cape Town's most famous views is that of the mountains known as the 'Twelve Apostles', from the white sands of Camps Bay Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Cape Peninsula. Swimmers should note that the Atlantic coast beaches are cold water, the Indian Ocean beaches offering warmer water for swimmers.

7) Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Nestling against the flanks of the Table Mountain range that extends the length of the Cape Peninsula, these gardens showcase some of the thousands of unique plant species endemic to the tiny but immensely rich Cape Floral Kingdom.

8) Kalk Bay Harbour. A traditional fishing village on the Indian Ocean coast, with the mountain behind and picturesque fishing boats on the blue sea stretching to the horizon. Kalk Bay is an ideal place to sample some of the legendary seafood that Cape Town offers.

9) Simonstown. Resembling an English village, Simonstown was indeed once part of Britain's foothold in Africa. Its Victorian houses on the mountainside and well-preserved old buildings and military structures make it a memorable place for anyone interested in militaria. The harbour areas have been appealingly developed for shoppers and those in search of a good meal. Nearby Boulders Beach is famous as a jackass penguin colony.

10) Cape Point Nature Reserve. Windswept and unspoilt, Cape Point gives visitors a glimpse of the Peninsula as it once was. Buffel's Bay is a good beach for visitors to picnic at. The Reserve has been restocked with game (notably antelope) and is famous for its troupes of baboons. A miniature railway gives visitors a tour or, for the more adventurous, there are various walks and hikes.

Cape Town is packed with places to go and activities to participate in. Visitors should be aware of the relatively high crime rate and exercise caution, but most will have a trouble-free and unforgettable holiday in the sun.
