Contact lenses online hints and tips

By: Clemente Vaughner

Here is a technique for removing rigid lenses. Bend over and hold your open palm in front of your eye. Using your other hand, pull the skin on the outer edge of your eyelid towards your ear, and blink. The lens should pop into your open hand fairly easily.

You can use a plunger, available from your optician, to remove contact lenses without getting your hands near your eyes. This can be easier and more hygienic, but you have to be careful only to touch the lens, rather than your eye, with it.

UV light exposure can cause cataracts and snow blindness, but you can combat this by wearing UV blocking contacts. Usually it will say on the packaging whether your lenses contain a UV blocker or not, but there is no way of telling just by looking at the lens itself.

While they can provide some extra protection, UV blocking contacts are not to be used in place of sunglasses in bright conditions, as they do not reduce light levels and do not cover your whole eye.

Sunglasses with UV protection cover more of your eye and the surrounding area than contact lenses, although the degree of the protection very much depends on the size and shape of the sunglasses. However, you can only benefit from the extra protection that you will receive if you wear sunglasses in addition to UV blocking lenses.

If you wear eye make up, you should put your lenses in before you apply any make up to your eye area, so that you do not risk marks being left on the lens. Also, you should always use non allergenic make up, so that you do not irritate your eyes, which can make wearing contacts painful.

If you prefer powder to cream when it comes to eye shadow, close your eyes while you are putting it on, and brush off any excess powder before you open your eyes. Cream is less likely to get into your eyes, but will be more irritating if it does, so use a water based cream rather than an oil based one wherever possible.

When removing eye make up, first you must wash and dry your hands, and then you have to remove your contact lenses, being careful to avoid them coming into contact with any make up. Then, and only then, you can use your usual eye make up remover. Avoid using eye make up that is over three months old, and never share it with others, as this may increase your risk of getting an eye infection.
