Day trips in Mallorca

By: Jarrett Altrogge

Mallorca is one of Europe''s most popular package destinations and a perfect place to go if you''re looking for sun, sea and sand. But away from the tourist spots, the island is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and offers a wealth of activities from sightseeing to adventure sports.

If you''ve dismissed Mallorca as too conventional for your tastes, then here are five day trips that might help change your mind.

1. Caves of Drach: Comprising over 2,000 metres of spectacular caverns, the Caves of Drach are Mallorca''s best known and most visited tourist destination. In addition to some stunning stalactites, stalagmites and limestone formations, the system boasts three lofty chambers and one of the world''s largest subterranean lakes.

2. Palma to Soller: The railway from Palma Soller isn''t just a way of getting from A to B ? the views from the coaches as the train winds its measured way through pristine countryside are unparalleled in Mallorca. A thriving market town complete with a beautiful beach awaits you on arrival in Soller.

3. Palma Aquarium: If the kids are getting bored of dozing on the beach, then take them to Palma Aquarium. Reputed to be Europe''s best marine park, it boasts over 50 tanks and a range of different zones, including New World, Old World and Jungle. See a huge range of marine life, including sharks, stingray, seahorses, anemones and morays.

4. Alcudia: Mallorca is an island of two sides, where modern development and world-class tourism infrastructure rubs shoulders with traditional villages and ancient towns. Alcudia is a great place to visit if you want to experience Mallorca''s historical side. The pre-Roman settlement boasts a beautiful amphitheatre, a medieval chapel and a number of interesting museums.

5. Capocorb Vell: For a true taste of history, don''t miss a trip to the Capocorb Vell site. This prehistoric settlement is one of the best preserved of its kind in Europe, and boasts the remains of several houses as well as a number of Bronze Age megaliths. It is located in the south of Malllorca and dates back to approximately 1,000 BC.

Public transport on Mallorca is limited, so to experience the best that the island has to offer it''s a good idea to hire a car. A vehicle will give you access to some of the island''s most famous sites ? not to mention its best beaches.
