Decoding CAD - an in-depth analysis

Computer-aided design (CAD) is used for designing real and virtual objects. CAD ordinarily involves more than just shapes. The output of CAD often must also contain symbolic information, such as processes, dimensions and tolerances according to application-specific conventions.
CAD can be deployed to design curves and figures in 2-dimensional (2D) space, and curves, surfaces and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space.
CAD is effectively deployed in automobile, shipbuilding and aerospace industries, industrial and architectural design, prosthetics and others. CAD is also extensively deployed to produce computer animation for special effects in movies, commercials and technical manuals. CAD is used for designing tools and equipment as well as for drafting and designing all kinds of buildings, from residential buildings to the largest commercial and industrial structures, for instance hospitals and factories. CAD is principally deployed for detailed engineering of 3D models and 2D drawings of physical components, but it is also deployed in the engineering process. People who work in this sphere are called designers, CAD Monkeys, Automotive design Engineers and Digital Innovation Engineers. CAD is also a regular work activity for the traditional engineering professions.
Computer-aided design has grown into a particularly important technology within the scope of computer-aided technologies, since it is cost effective and time-saving.
In the late Eighties when the Computer-Aided Design programs became widely available, there started massive layoffs in drawing departments of some businesses, particularly small and mid-size ones. A CAD operator could supersede three-five drafters still using traditional technologies. Besides, a great many engineers started to do their own drafting projects, thus the need for traditional drafting departments vanished. As a result of, a large number of drafters were laid off.
Since the advances were high-priced, only large firms could afford them. Hence, small firms were unable to contend against giant companies that widely deployed CAD. Now, hardware and software costs are reasonably priced. Even high-end packages require cheaper platforms and some even support multiple platforms.
In addition, there have been designed various packages to convert CAD files to other formats.
