Different methods of reaching the airport

By: Thanh Rabuse

Getting yourself ready for a holiday isn''t quite like anything else. Whilst you make sure that you''ve got the correct seasonal wardrobe and some good books to read, you can almost feel the heat on your face and taste the salt from the sea water on your lips.

But the anticipation and excitement surrounding travel can make us forget that taking trips can be a bit of a logistical headache. While what you really want is to be in that beautiful Spanish coastal resort at the drop of a hat, the reality of getting to an airport stands in the way.

It is however possible to make this first leg of the journey fairly painless. If, for example, you''re intent on driving yourself to whichever airport you''re departing from, it''s possible to arrange a long-stay parking space well in advance. This way you have independence from the potential hazards of public transport, let alone those often less-than-comfortable seats.

If the idea of an early morning drive with the dangers of traffic don''t appeal, let alone the potentially jetlagged journey home at the end of your break, then you could always treat yourself and your fellow holidaymakers to a taxi or minicab, and making sure you''ve sorted something out enough time ahead will usually mean you''ll be able to get a good price deal.

But when you''re travelling light or just going on a brief weekend break, public transport can be just the thing. Instead of having to worry about whether your car is going to be well looked after in an airport multi-storey, you can take a direct train to most major national airports with very little hassle.

Similarly, bus and coach travel from town or city centres into airports is pretty straightforward. Generally the cheapest option, coaches run far more regularly and often more efficiently than any rail service.

Inexpensive airline companies will often have a counterpart bus service to get customers to the airport. EasyBus, for instance, could charge you as little as ?2 for a trip to Gatwick, Stansted, or Luton, provided you book well in advance. Furthermore, despite what it sounds like, you don''t have to be flying easyJet to be able to make use of this service ? it''s open to everyone.

Going on holiday is a time for relaxation, a time when the stresses that crowd our daily lives should be put to the back of the mind. Although it almost certainly won''t be foremost in your plans, making sure you''ve got a good and well thought out way of getting to your airport is going to make sure your break gets off on the right note.
