Do It Yourself or Package Deals?

By: Sal Greet

As holiday season approaches, thoughts quickly turn to images of blue seas and hot temperatures; the ideal getaway for you and loved ones. Or maybe you''d like to spend a couple of weeks up in the mountains, on a skiing holiday. Whatever constitutes your ideal holiday, you probably want to get the best deal you can for your money. No matter what sort of holiday you''re taking, there are some things you''ll need to decide before you book your travel.

DIY or package deal? Depending on the sort of holiday you want, it may be less expensive in some instances to go with a package holiday rather than a DIY one. What does a package holiday mean exactly?

Well, these are generally holidays booked through a travel agent where flights and accommodation are booked together as part of one deal. Although not the most flexible type of holiday, most tour operators are able to customise slightly to your tastes and need, sometimes booking additional excursions and activities.

If you go DIY however, you''ll find you get much more flexibility since you''ll be booking the flights and accommodation yourself. Whilst you may have to do the legwork, the internet has made things much easier for the independent traveller, and it''s now much easier to tailor your holiday exactly to your wants and needs.

So which to go for? Well, generally if you simply want a traditional 7 or fortnight''s break to a ''typical'' holiday destination at the height of the season, you''ll be able to get the best deals on package holidays. Just make sure the travel agent you choose is ATOL bonded - that way you''ll be protected should anything go wrong. Here it pays to book very early (ie ten months in advance) as the tour operators are offer good discounts as incentive.

However, if you can''t be that organised, then the other way to get a cheaper deal is to leave it late - no earlier than ten weeks beforehand. However, you''ll need to be much more flexible about dates and accommodation.

If you''re planning to go somewhere unusual, or taking a longer trip, then go DIY. Booking your own flights and accommodation will probably be the cheapest option so don''t be put off by the process. Once you know your destination, use flight comparison websites to get the cheapest flights.

With accommodation, again, there are price comparison websites that can help you find a competitively priced room at a good hotel, far undercutting what the hotel may quote on it''s own site. You could save hundreds just by spending an hour doing research.
