Essential City Breaks

By: Sal Greet

The need to get away with relative ease has a strong pull. City breaks are desirable as we like aimlessly meandering through alien streets and architecture, chancing on sophisticated restaurants to rest in and places to tell our friends about. Cheap air travel is apparently here to stay so hotels on the continent are within a short practical hop.

Booking the flights and finding a convenient hotel is straightforward enough, but firstly you need to know where to visit. Which city''s do you want to go back to and which ones haven''t you got round to trying? Finding time to make initial enquiries is time consuming, so here''s a few ideas.

Barcelona''s cosmopolitan sophistication has become a favourite among European city breaks. It''s also a busy port adding to the attraction in the bar and restaurant districts which are vibrant, full of fun and charm. Architecturally there are many places to mention but a don''t miss is the Antoni Gaudin Unfinished Church of the Sagrada Family. There are beaches close by too offering you another added extra option.

Paris is quite possibly the most romantic city in the world. In the 1920''s Paris became a cultural magnet and artistic beacon, attracting figures such as Pablo Picasso and Salvadore Dali. Many cinemas showing hundreds of films on a weekly basis pepper the city, amongst it''s fantastic array of well known architectural and historical sites.

Berlin''s unique position in recent history make it a truly fascinating city to explore. The various sites of the Berlin Wall are a huge draw but with 400 art galleries and numerous museums amongst the ever changing, progessive city planning, the architecture really makes his city a mecca for those seeking something slightly off centre. Berlin also has some of the best nightclubs in the world.

Brussels is a often overlooked by the city break enthusiasts out there, and wrongly so. It has much to offer in terms of historical and architectural fascination, from the Grand Palace, itself a World Heritage Site to the post modernist buildings of the EU. Check out the Atomium with its 103m tall 9 sphere structure. Brussels is also a great place for beer and chocolate!

Rome is a place that we all should visit at least once in our lifetime, being perhaps the most fascinating city in the world. Monuments are all over, from the Colosseum to the Forum, to Palatine Hill, as Rome is artistically second to none. The Mediterannean climate is also a huge draw.

Each offers varying types of hotel accomadation depending on your needs and budget. You can be close to the centre, or a little further out. Maybe you want to spend time lounging around and pampering yourself in the confines of the hotel? There''s something out there no matter what your needs.
