Wai-ing. A wai is a form of greeting. It is performed by bringing the hands together (as if in prayer), pointing them slightly upwards and towards the person who you are greeting, and accompanied by a deft nod of the head. If you are wai-ed you should return the gesture (unless it is to a child). Generally you wai people older than you, but as a foreigner you can get away with a smile. Head and feet have very different statuses in Thailand than in Western cultures. The head, as the highest point of the body, is considered sacred and it is rude to touch someone's head. Conversely feet are seen as dirty and it is customary to take off shoes and socks before entering a household. It is also rude to point your feet or the soles of your feet at someone. Temple etiquette requires that you dress appropriately (ie covered shoulders and arms, covered legs) when entering. It's considered rude for women to touch monks in any way ? if you want to pass something on, it must be done indirectly. Also, feet should point away from any Buddhas in the temple ? this is done by sitting in a 'mermaid' position. The monarchy is revered in Thailand, so much so that licking a stamp with the King's head on is considered incredibly rude and it is illegal to speak negatively of the King. In 2007 a Swiss man was sentenced to ten years in prison, after having defaced some posters of the King. Aside from the threat of jail, many Thais would be extremely offended to hear someone speak of the King in a negative manner. Saving face means that Thais will go to great lengths not to lose face in public and will avoid confrontation as far as possible. Losing face can cause great embarrassment and it's best to avoid situations where that can happen ? accusing someone of being wrong, or lying ? in short, of acting dishonourably, can cause loss of face, which can sometimes result in violent or aggressive behaviour. The most important thing to remember is be polite and respectful, and that holds for wherever you travel. Remember travel insurance can help if things go wrong. As long as you're aware of your behaviour, you shouldn't have any problems and Thailand will be one of those places you'll want to visit over and over again.
