Everything you need to know about car rental

By: BERENICE KORBAL

Most car rental companies require you to be over the age of 25 in order to hire from them. A minority will allow you to hire from them if you are over 21, while some will allow drivers over the age of 18. Be aware though that as a younger driver you will have to pay considerably more for your car hire and for your insurance too.

When deciding on a rental car, hire companies will often try to get you to upgrade to a larger more expensive vehicle, but do not be pressed. Think carefully about your needs, as the smaller the car you hire, the less you will have to pay for the rental, and the less you will have to pay for petrol too.

Most car rental companies will require that you pay by credit card. This way they can take a deposit from your card and return this deposit to your card when you return the car safe and sound. Make sure they refund this to your card while you are on site. Some rental firms may allow you to leave a cash deposit but this policy varies from company to company.

Make sure you check your existing car insurance policy before you book and pay for your car rental insurance. You may already be covered for some or all aspects of car hire insurance, so you want to avoid paying twice. Your travel insurance may also cover some aspects of your car hire, while your home insurance may already cover the cost of any of your valuables being stolen from your hire car.

Car hire prices vary from company to company, and also vary depending on supply and demand. For this reason, it is wise to get as many car hire quotes as possible before making a purchase. Use a car hire comparison website and you should be able to spot good deals easily too.

The majority of the larger car rental firms set their prices automatically via a database. According to the supply and demand of rental vehicles at any one time, the database automatically adjusts the prices. For customers this means that prices can change in an instant, so if you see a deal you like the look of it is best to purchase it then and there as it may not be there tomorrow.

If you are a member of an organisation such as the AA, or a credit union, or are a serving member of the armed forces then you may be eligible for discounts, free upgrades and perks from some car hire companies. Be sure to check which discounts are available to you before you go through with your car hire booking.

Just as package holidays can save you a bundle on your vacation costs, package deals can also save you money on your car hire. It is now possible to purchase your car hire, hotel and flights at the same time through various travel companies, and you can make savings by purchasing them all together.
