Experience the glamour of Majorca

By: Jarrett Altrogge

Small and perfectly formed, Majorca is one of Spain''s most multi-faceted regions. It has a glitzy, celeb-attracting harboured capital, endless miles of beaches, rocky mountains, British chippies and brash, cheesy Euro-pop nightclubs. Aside from trashy clubs and pubs and a few overcrowded beaches you''ll find Majorca has something to offer everyone.

Palma de Mallorca is the island''s capital and it will more than satisfy culture-hungry city lovers. It has commanding grand open expanses, the best of which can be found at Catedral de Mallorca and Museo Catedralicio. The cathedral dominates the low-rising sky line and boasts breathtaking views over the harbour.

Dispersed throughout the narrow and winding shady streets and alleys is a pick ''n'' mix of old and new, Moorish and Catholic architecture. There are plenty of hidden courtyards, churches, caf?s and heladerias ? ice cream parlours ? to discover.

The Serra de Tramuntana mountains dominate the north west coast. The region is largely untouched by tourism and olive, lemon and orange groves, thick pine forests and ''secret'' mountain villages replace over-preened resorts and golf courses. The coastline is rugged and rocky, so perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving and even canyoning.

Around Soller and Pollenca there is great hiking, although the main route is along the Lluc Pilgrimage. Biking is also prevalent. Whether you like down-hill mountain biking, road mountain climbing or cruising along the flat, this region has it all.

If you like sun, sand and sea, then you have come to the right place. Majorca has some of Spain''s best beaches and you can still find a secluded spot or two here and there. Most of the beaches are scattered along the north and east coasts although the south has a spattering of attractive and less visited beaches.

If you don''t want to share the beach with hundreds of other roasting bodies, opt for the rockier coves and bays of the south or choose the remoter and hard to access beaches in the north. Here, because the cliffs are so sheer, there are fewer resort developments so many beaches are largely untouched.

Getting to and from all of these places can be tricky if you are relying on public transport, so hiring a car is by far your best bet. This makes a twin centre holiday, dividing your time between city and beach or mountain and beach, all the more feasible.
