Dubai is one of the seven emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates, and this city state has experienced a colossal growth in wealth since the discovery of oil in the area in the mid 1960s. The oil boom has in turn recently fuelled massive property development in Dubai. Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has sought to turn the desert state into a world class tourist destination. The result has been the construction of some of the most ostentatious structures and lavish accommodation in the world. One of the most famous buildings in Dubai, and one that you cannot fail to miss upon your arrival, is the Burj Khalifa. Standing at a remarkable 828 metres, this is now the tallest building in the world, stretching to twice the height of the American Empire State Building. Another similarly ostentatious development, and one that is completely unique, is the World Islands archipelago. These islands, stretching to 9kn long and over 6km are man made islands in the form of the major land masses that cover our earth. This truly unique attraction is home to luxury homes, hotels and more, and rumour has it that David Beckham is the proud owner of one of the private islands here. Dubai is known for its jewellery production, and there is no better place in the world to shop for gold, platinum and precious jewels and stones. The best places for bargains are the Souks, or traditional street markets, in particular the Gold and Diamond Park, and the Gold Souk. Here you will find a glittering array of jewellery, as well as skilled jewellers who can create bespoke designs just for you. Be prepared to haggle here, and you could get a real bargain too. Those looking for more traditional holiday pursuits in Dubai will find plenty to do. Swimming, boating and scuba diving around the coast is extremely popular, and you will find a wealth of restaurants and eateries as well as giant cinema complexes. Those brave enough can enjoy swimming with shark day trips, and you can even ski and snowboard in Dubai thanks to their giant indoor piste facility, which is the largest of its kind in the world.
