Built in 1910, the romantic Jardim Botanico Estufa Fria, or the Estufa Fria Botanical Garden, is one of the most popular spots in the city with tourists and locals alike. Its collections are vast and varied and it is open 10am every day except Mondays. A great day out for children is to take a trip to the Oceanarium, filled with interactive exhibits and activities. This modern architectural wonder is home to a wide variety of sea life, marine botanicals and marine birds, and its aim is to educate everyone about the wonderful marine life around Portugal. For some stunning views out over the seas, take a day trip to Sintra, where you can ride by horse-drawn carriage through the wooded hills and manor houses up to the Pena Palace. Designed by Fernando Cobourg Gothas, the palace is a fascinating blend of gothic and romantic architectural styles, and provides some beautiful photo opportunities. One of the best ways to explore the sights of Lisbon is to hop aboard the Vintage Tram 28. At only 1.35 EURO per ticket, this 45 minute tram journey will guide you through the city streets, climbing perilous hills all the way up the monastery at Graca, the Igreja de Sao Vicente Fora. The Chiada district of Lisbon is essentially the downtown area. Here you will find beautifully preserved market squares, with tiling and mosaic everywhere. There are also plenty of shops, from independent stores to chic designer outlets, fine dining establishments, and some of the best cafes and coffee houses in the city. There are many museums and galleries dotted around Lisbon, especially around the Chiada area. Those with a passion for fashion will enjoy the Museu Nacional do Traje e da Moda, the National Museum of Costume and Fashion. For contemporary art head to the Berardo Collection, and for a history of truly unique Portuguese tile mosaics, spend an afternoon at the Museu do Azulejo.
