Eye care tips

By: Clemente Vaughner

Near-sightedness or myopia is becoming more prevalent across the globe. Many people believe there is a correlation between the rise in computer usage and the increased incidents of myopia, however there is actually no real proof to substantiate this claim.

Many people fear losing their eyesight over losing any other ''sense''. It''s not as if any of us want to go deaf or lose our sense of taste and smell either but going blind is usually a bigger worry for most people. However, there are ways you can protect your eyesight.

First off if it is bring outside, even if it''s not ''sunny'' make sure you wear sunglasses. England isn''t famed for its sunny weather but even when the weather is overcast, there are damaging UV rays lurking around. These rays can seriously damage your eyes if you are constantly exposed to them.

Don''t just pick up the cheapest pair in the shop however. Check that they conform to European safety standards and display the CE mark which means the glasses will protect you from harmful ultra violet rays.

As mentioned above, take regular ''screen breaks''. This is so your eyes can focus on something else, preferable something in the distance or out the window maybe, to avoid double vision, headaches, eyestrain and soreness.

Your diet can also affect your eyesight. We are not talking about carrots helping you to see in the dark. That is just an old wives tale. However, other foods such as mango, squash, broccoli, green beans and spinach are high in lutein and zeaxanthin which helps reduce the risk of getting cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Consult an optician if your family has a history of eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma as early detection can lead to more straightforward treatment. Whether you currently wear glasses or contact lenses or not regular eye checks are essential so you can keep abreast of any changes in vision quality and monitor your general eye health.

If you do wear contact lenses, your cleaning regime should be second to none. Only use specifically prepared solutions that are designed for your lenses if possible. Never borrow anyone else''s lenses and never sleep in them unless directed to by you optometrist. If you don''t stick to a rigid cleaning routine you can risk infection, corneal disease or even, in the worst case scenario, the loss of an eye.
