In the last twelve months the lucrative online poker market has been rocked by a series of high profile lawsuits all of which have placed the spotlight rather firmly on the methods that online poker websites use to generate their games. It is no surprise that in the wake of these lawsuits player confidence in the sites has plummeted. Less than 50% of online poker players trust the websites and the leading criticism is that the cards might not be fair. Some of the issues raised by the lawsuits are almost impossible to resolve. It''s very difficult to stop a player having more than one account in order to try and more closely ascertain what''s in the pot. Though this is an issue, for most players, it''s the least of the problems associated to the poker industry. The main problem is that there is little proof that the cards that are ''drawn'' are actually random at all. Mostly they''re generated by random number generators which are pieces of software and will do as they are programmed to. The problem is that they may not be programmed to be completely random, but rather to encourage players to wager large sums of money on the fall of statistically likely cards that are relatively rarely drawn. An additional problem has been the alleged use of ''bots'' in game rooms. A bot is an artificial player who is placed in the room either by another player at the table (by using multiple accounts) or by the company operating the table allegedly in order to fill more seats at more tables, and thus increase their turnover. Of course, such instances are relatively low frequency, but one or two events can cast suspicion on an entire market. That is why the new system unveiled by RealDealPoker has gained such widespread attention. The theory behind RealDeal is simple; it is that there will be an actual, genuine deal with a pack of cards. The draws are recorded and can be independently audited in the case of an accusation of foul play and players can choose to cut the cards at different levels in the pack (with the aim of eliminating automated players). The technology has been independently tested by the University of Denver, and has been nominated for a stack of awards, which offers rather compelling evidence of its effectiveness. RealDeal hasn''t yet been launched, but when it does it looks set to revolutionise the way that online poker is played, and for the poker industry it''s coming along at just the right time.
