Some places never go out of fashion, and Portugal''s Algarve is one such region, with an appeal to young and old alike. Whilst there is a huge amount of classic beach culture on offer, with the ever-popular Meia Praia attracting surfers and surf-oglers, it is a shame that visitors often completely overlook the city which sits at the Algarve''s heart. Faro is far more than just the Algarve''s administrative centre: it is a bustling seaside town with masses of history that is well worth exploring. The town has lived under Moorish, Roman and Catholic rule, and its architecture and cuisine is a melting-pot reflection of that, with cathedrals nestling against ruins in the streets, and with spices and meats and fish competing for pride of place on the plate. After the Moors came King Alfonso III and his influence has also had an impact on the architecture of Faro. On the site of the Roman Forum - another culture which had a huge impact on Faro and the Algarve region in the latter years of the Empire - you can now find a 13th century Cathedral, brought in by Alfonso. With all these historical and cultural qualities, it is somewhat sobering that most tourists are more interested in the poolside lounging and largely English-speaking nightclubs catering to under-30s holidays. Taking a closer look at the city proves just how much there is to discover. A trip to the Naval museum by the harbour intones the maritime experiences of the city; another place of interest is the Faro Jewish Heritage Centre, which pays testimony to the many Jewish inhabitants of the city during Moorish rule, who mostly dedicated themselves to scribing the Old Testament. But maybe you''ll get hungry after all that travel and culture. Thankfully there are plenty of restaurants for the all the fresh catches of the day in Faro. This is still a fishing area, and what is more, the Algarve is also Portugal''s main wine-producing region. Who could argue with supporting local produce like that?
