New York holds the crown as fashion capital of the world, and has produced some of the world's top designers. Hailing from the city are Anna Sui, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Betsey Johnson. Styles vary from Ralph Lauren's wholesome denim look, to Betsey Johnson's punk-glam outfits, to Dianne Von Furstenberg's famous wraparound print dresses. Much of New York fashion is inspired by the artists and rock bands that live in its hip areas, and a New York look can be edgy and chic - as fashion week New York showed new ideas using feathers, hats, sequins and lots of black. Ralph Lauren made tweed glam again and eighties' zippers found their way back on coats. If you're after hard-to-get-your-hands-on designs, head straight to Fifth Avenue for Saks and Bergdorf Goodman, who stock the high-end of haute-couture and some rare collections. Coming in second is Rome, and again the list of designers are endless ? try Missoni, Gucci and Roberto Cavalli on for size. The city has always been beautifully turned out thanks to an abundance of boutiques and it specialises in the craftsmanship of haute-couture. Milan has a typically preened, sophisticated look, much like the city. At the start of the year, Rome Fashion Week unveiled gypsy-inspired skirts, sequinned evening gowns and Galliano embraced bubble-skirt. When in Rome, take a wander down Via Condetti for some of the biggest names in couture like Prada, Armani, Alberta Ferretti and Max Mara, who have all set up shop there. Paris did reign as fashion capital of the world before New York championed all the other cities. It's now resting in third place, but Paris still has a style that is as chic as you'll find anywhere. The designers that hail from the city read like a royal family of the fashion world: Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton are a handful of names. The classic Coco Chanel skirt-suit hasn't ever really left the pages of Vogue and is revamped season after season. In the recent Paris Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfield, Chanel's current designer, slashed the suit and touched it up with denim for a funky twist, and Louis Vuitton suggested we all stock up some ladylike coats and neckties. For shopping, you can't go wrong with the streets of Saint Germaine, where the biggest names in fashion design line the streets in swanky glass boutiques. You should probably invest in some kind of travel insurance; losing a boutique buy will hurt the whole holiday experience.
