Fathers Day flower suggestions

In America, the single white lily is the traditional flower of Fathers Day, which is a tradition that goes back as far as 1913. You can also get lilies in colours such as lilac, and lilac and white lilies look great in combination.

In the UK and much of Europe, roses, and in particular white and red roses, have a close association with Fathers Day. However, the chances are that your father will neither know nor care about this tradition, so you might be as well getting him some different coloured roses for the sake of variety.

Male stereotypes would seem to indicate that men prefer bold colours to pastel shades, so unless your father is a particularly vocal fan of subtle colour schemes, it is better to go for a strong colour combination such as red and white, using carnations and roses to bring the colour scheme to life.

The flower of a carnation is quite wide and layered, so if you want to make an arrangement with a bit of contrast, you could add some slender and striking lily flowers to a sea of carnations. The best thing about carnations is that they come in lots of different colours, so you can create virtually any colour scheme with them.

If you want to create a flower arrangement with a regal look, why not fill a wicker basket with white chrysanthemums, topped off with a few rare blue orchids? Blue and white is a colour combination that is rarely used in flower arranging, so it will really stand out from the crowd.

Sunflowers are a cheery looking alternative to traditional gift flowers, and are in full bloom at this time of year. A dozen freshly cut sunflowers in a square vase can make for an unorthodox, yet strangely warming flower arrangement.

In recent years, tropical flowers such as tulips, chrysanthemums, asters, and daisies have become an increasingly popular Fathers Day flower choice. Tropical flowers combine rich colours with deep, evocative aromas. If your father has a colour combination that is personal to him, such as the colours of the football team he supports, why not surprise him with a flower arrangement in those colours?

The man who virtually invented Fathers Day in the America, JH Berringer, chose the white lilac as the traditional Fathers Day flower. However, in most of Europe, red and white roses are more traditional, and have a deep significance in some cultures.
