This article features the weapon that became a major breakthrough in the arms industry. This is the Colt Revolver. Samuel Colt got the idea of inventing a handgun with a revolving cylinder containing several bullets that could be fired through a single barrel when he was a seaman. When he came back to the United States he continued to work on his invention, and in 1835 his 5-shot firearm was patented. It was a breakthrough, since it transformed a firearm into a multiple-shot device. In 1836 Colt started his Patent Arms Manufacturing enterprise New Jersey, USA. Alongside his five-shot firearms, he produced rifles and shotguns. John Coffee Hays of the Texas Rangers purchased colt revolvers for his men, who were used to fighting against men armed with single-shot guns and suffered heavy fatalities in the 1840s. Despite this success, sales were generally slow, and in 1842 he was forced to close down his factory. After that he invented a device that could set off an underwater explosive by remote control. Later on he became involved in telegraph technology and developed the first underwater telegraph cable. In 1847 Colt introduced a six-shot Walker revolver. Shortly, the U.S. Government ordered 1, 000 revolvers that were used in the Mexican War. Colt established a new firm in Connecticut. By 1855 Colt had the biggest private weapons producing facility in the world. He made a great choice of revolvers. His Navy Colt was particularly popular with gunfighters. During the Civil War Colt's company sold thousands of revolvers and rifles. These firearms were purchased by both sides. After the death of Samual Colt, the business was managed by Colt's wife and employed 1, 500 workers. Colt's most popular revolver, the Peacemaker, was made for the first time in 1873. It was made in a selection of caliber and barrel lengths. Colt and his firearms played a significant role in the history of a developing America. So popular was the Colt revolver in the 1800s that it was probably the best-known gun across the world. Even these days, the name Colt suggests weapons to most Americans.
