Mediterannean beaches have less sand than their Caribbean and Pacific counterparts, offering more in the way of pebbles and shingle it seems. The water''s temperature is lower too. On average Atlantic and Pacific beaches offer bigger waves for those surfers amongst you.

Mediterannean beaches are even more popular than ever. Many of the bigger, more well known, popular ones enjoy large influxes of holidaymakers over the summer period. But with many countries and literally hundreds of beaches to opt for, what follows are ideas for beaches to look out for, both well known and seemingly untuched.

Oludeniz Beach, Turkey, is an amazing place near to the hill town of Belcekiz. It''s truly stunning and because of this incredibly well visited thanks to it''s perfect crystal clear seas which lead you along the beach to a wonderful blue lagoon. Watersports are always available and there are naturally plenty of places to eat and drink. Weather, according to the locals, is 20 degrees plus, all year round.

Benniras on Ibiza is the island''s northern mountainous region, located far, far away from the dance centres. This quiet beach is found along a bendy mountain road, shadowed by high cliffs, where a European hippi crowd tend to hang out, patiently waiting for the always reliable sunset. Nearby accomadation is expensive, but this beach is definitely worth a visit if you make the effort to get there.

Sidi Abdel Rahman, Egypt, is a long, white, sandy, untouched beach which is never crowded and situated close to the historically significant and beautiful city of Alexandria. It''s a very easy going and relaxed place. Perfect to go to in order to slip away and unwind.

Sani, Halkidiki, Greece, is a long sandy beach with stunning cliffs and a wonderful pine forest. Hotels are in abundance next to the marina, and there is also a campsite. There is even an outdoor cinema in this modern developed coastal resort.

At San Vito Lo Capo on Sicily there is a white beach, which is small and curved, flanked by high up, rugged cliffs. A nature reserve can be found at one end of the beach which is the gateway to a whole adventure of deserted coves. You''ll be glad to know that the nearby town is supported by an impressive selection of bars and restaurants.

We all seek different attributes to our beach experience, but most of us like the thrill of finding a new one. Above are a few ideas. Some are remote and deserted, and others have more facilties available but each one comes highly recommended.
