Flowers for every occasion

By: Nita Hannibal

Bright, cheery and brimming full of meaning, a bouquet can make a wonderful gift. If you want your floral present to really mean something, make sure that you choose the right blooms for the occasion.

Valentines Day: If you want to sweep your loved one off their feet then you can''t do better than the traditional bunch of deep red roses. Avoid the clich? by adding a few lilies, a sprig of stephanotis, or by wrapping your offering in special paper. For an extra special touch, try sending your loved one flowers at work or scattering them on her bed.

Anniversary: While nothing expresses passion and romantic love better than red roses, long-term love deserves something a little more personalised. Show that you really care by catering to your partner''s tastes ? go for a bloom that they favour, or surprise them by sending the same flowers you had at your wedding. Remember, this is all about the personal touch.

Apologies: There are very few arguments that a bunch of flowers and an apology note won''t heal. For the best results, try consulting the Victorian language of flowers ? send purple hyacinth, which means ''sorry''. Avoid fig, which means ''argument'' or foxglove for ''insincerity''.

Death: Traditionally, white lilies signifying purity are the appropriate flowers to send on the sad occasion of a loved one''s death. The asphodel flower, which means ''my regrets follow you to the grave'' could also be appropriate.

Congratulations: There''s no better method of sending congratulations than a bouquet. The blooms you choose should depend on the occasion ? try pink roses for graduation, stargazer lilies for a promotion, or sunflowers for almost any other occasion.

Get well soon: Illness can dampen the spirits and make anybody feel low, but a bunch of flowers will cheer them up in no time. Go for bright colours and sweet scents to promote happiness. Gerbera daisies are a good choice ? they signify cheerfulness and merry heartedness. Carnations are also always well received.

Surprise!: You don''t need to wait for a special event in order to send flowers. If you''re keen to spoil someone or just let them know that you''re thinking of them then surprise them with an impromptu bouquet. If you''re being spontaneous then almost any bloom goes, although betony ? appropriately meaning ''surprise'' ? is a good choice.
