Free things to do in Miami

Head to the Little Havana district of Miami and you will find something called Viernes Culturales, or Cultural Fridays. On the last Friday of each month from 6.30pm til late, the Calle Ocho in Little Havana opens its doors to visitors for free. Here you can see free open-air concerts, and watch sculptors, musicians and artists at work, as well as take a guided tour of Little Havana.

Several of the art galleries and museums around Miami open their doors to the public for free on a regular basis. View the contemporary collection at the Miami Art Museum for free every Sunday and every second Saturday, or the Wolfsonian-FIU Art Museum on Fridays after 6pm.

A fantastic free day out can be had for all the family at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. On Sunday afternoons at 1.30pm, 2.20pm and 3.30pm there are free guided tours of the hotel and its grounds, with storytellers and performers on hand to tell you all about the historic hotel an its famous guests, including Judy Garland and Al Capone.

There are several free museums around Miami, including the Miami Holocaust Memorial, open daily from 9am to 9pm. There is also the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, which spans 50 acres and hosts regular free talks, debates, performances, concerts and tours. You can also tour the Bacardi Museum, tracing the history of the drink back to its first production in 1862.

A great place for a family day out is the Miami Science Museum. They hold free planetarium shows on the first Friday of the month in their Weintraub Observatory. Shows are 2 hours long and start at 8pm, and the Museum screens space-related films and hosts visiting exhibitions and a permanent collection too.

One of the main attractions in Miami is its fantastic beach, and one stretch has been designed specifically with families in mind. Between 53rd and 63rd Street you will find playgrounds and picnic areas, and family events like treasure hunts too.

The Biscayne National Park hosts a regular Family Fun Fest from January through to May of each year and it is completely free. Explore the wonders of this national park and enjoy hands-on nature activities for kids as well as storytelling, performances and guided nature walks.

Arch Creek Park and Museum is centred round an ancient limestone bridge that was once part of an important Indian trail. The Museum is home to exhibits and artefacts left by the native people as they passed through the area and every Saturday morning there are free guided nature walks too.
